Get to know us

The Eco-Wellbeing & Affective Health Laboratory (EWAH Lab) is built on a vibrant community of professors, researchers, technical specialists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate trainees, and collaborative partners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Together, we form an interdisciplinary ecosystem that integrates cognitive and affective neuroscience, environmental psychology, digital phenotyping, complexity science, public health, climate studies, linguistics, data science, and behavioral research.

Currently housed within the Mental Health Department of the Santa Casa de São Paulo School of Medical Sciences, the EWAH Lab operates with the dual mission of advancing cutting-edge research while cultivating a collaborative environment grounded in curiosity, scientific rigor, and human connection. Our team works across multiple levels of analysis — from neurophysiology and psychophysiology to environmental exposures, social identity, place-based experience, and climate-related emotional processes.

While we are deeply committed to academic excellence, innovation, and global scientific impact, we also believe that great science flourishes in spaces where people feel authentic, connected, and inspired. For this reason, the EWAH Lab celebrates not only the academic achievements of its members but also the human stories behind them:

their interests, their cultural journeys, their creative passions, and even the pets that accompany them through the rhythms of research and daily life.

This page highlights the people who make the EWAH Lab possible — a diverse, international, multidisciplinary, and deeply committed community working to advance the science of climate, emotion, wellbeing, and mental health.

Welcome to the EWAH Lab family.

Dr. Lucas M. Marques

Psychologist, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mental Health at the Santa Casa de São Paulo School of Medical Sciences, Head of Digital Health & Research at Infinity Doctors Inc. (an international digital health and telemedicine company with part of its team based in Miami), and Director of the Eco-Wellbeing & Affective Health Laboratory (EWAH Lab), where he leads interdisciplinary research on wellbeing, mental health, climate and environmental emotions, solastalgia, neurophysiology, environmental exposures, digital biomarkers, complexity science, and global health. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, including an academic exchange at the University of Minho (Portugal) through the Science Without Borders Program (CNPq), as well as a FAPESP-funded Master’s (2016) and PhD (2020) in Developmental Disorders from Mackenzie. He completed a FAPESP-funded postdoctoral fellowship in Neurophysiology at the University of São Paulo Medical School (IMREA-HCFMUSP) and holds a certification in Principles and Practices of Clinical Research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Lucas previously worked as a Senior Researcher in Wellbeing Science at Natura &Co and served on the Multidisciplinary Psychology Committee of the Brazilian Society of Neuromodulation (SBNM). He currently serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology (IJCHP), PLOS Mental Health, PLOS Climate, Frontiers in Cognition, and Frontiers in Psychology, in addition to being an international Ambassador for eLife and a member of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), Climate Health Society (CHS) and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll). His research program integrates affective and social neuroscience, environmental psychology, public and planetary health, digital phenotyping, machine learning, and complexity science to understand how climatic and ecological change shape emotions, cognition, vulnerability, resilience, and human adaptation across systems and scales. Outside academia, Lucas is a drummer and lifelong heavy metal enthusiast, an active Duathlon athlete, a former Scout, a dedicated Batman fan, husband to Luciana, and proud “dog dad” to Wisky — the most mischievous and beloved little Yorkie, and the unofficial mascot of the EWAH Lab.

Natália Rocha

Medical student

Natália is a medical student at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo, with a deep interest in studying mental health and sports medicine. For that reason, she developed, along with her professor and advisor Lucas Murrins Marques, a research project funded by a scientific initiation scholarship that investigates mental health in athletes and non-athletes. A daily practitioner of physical activity, her passion is swimming. Outside of her routine, she loves going to the beach, watching series, and returning to her home in the countryside of São Paulo.
Gabriel Pedone

Medical student

Gabriel is a medical student at the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo (Class of 2027), with a strong interest in researching how interactive technologies impact psychological well-being. He is currently conducting a research project on Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), alongside his supervisor and mentor, Dr. Lucas Murrins Marques. He is also highly enthusiastic about artificial intelligence, especially its applications in health and interactive technologies. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer and golf.
Sophia is a Psychology student at Mackenzie Presbyterian University who cares deeply about how climate change shapes mental health and behavior. She is a Planetary Health Ambassador for Planetary Health Brazil in partnership with the University of São Paulo (IEA–USP).
